Approach

At Coachly, we recognize that the solution to any issue has to always be right-sized and right-timed. That means we utilize many different problem-solving techniques. However, we are quite fond of one process-improvement technique that can apply itself to many types of issues. It’s called the DMAIC (dih-MAY-ick) process and here’s how it works.


Define

Discover the underlying cause of issues or concerns and eliminate inaccurate perceptions and assumptions surrounding them. Define the problem statement, define goals,objectives and most importantly the project scope


Measure

Establish a baseline by measuring the key data points that pertain to the current situation. Collect data on current performance, double check the baseline for accuracy. Fully measure the extent of the problem/concern


Analyze

Investigate the challenge using real data. Conduct a root cause analysis to properly identify the underlying factors contributing to the problem/concern. Use data collection analysis tools such as histograms, scatter plots, cause and effect diagrams to investigate potential causes.


Improve

Develop and implement solutions to address the identified root causes. Pilot test the selected solutions on a small scale to assess their effectiveness. Optimize the process by making necessary adjustments based on the pilot test results. Estimate the benefit of the changes, and define how impact will be measured


Control

Create a system to monitor the success of the initiative going forward. Ensure the solution is measurable and sustainable. Track the performance regularly with a dashboard so you can correct quickly if needed
